Background: During the aging process modified functions of the hypothalamic factors may cause changes in pituitary somatotrophs (growth hormone producing cells) and lactotrophs (prolactin hormone producing cells). Aim of the work: the present work was designed in order to differentiate between the somatotrophs and lactotrophs at different age groups. Materials and Methods: thirty female albino rats were used, pituitary tissues from young (5weeks), adult (6months) and old (24 months) were labeled immunohistochemichally for somatotrophs and lactotrophs. Results: age-related decline in somatotrophs was detected with increase in lactotrophs. Conclusion: The present study revealed that aging can cause an effect on somatotrophs and lactotrophs which can be detected immunohistochemichally.
