STENTING VERSUS NON-STENTING EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCK WAVE LITHOTRIPSY FOR TREATMENT OF RENAL STONES IN CHILDREN (A PROSPECTIVE RANDOMIZED STUDY)

Objective: this work aimed to determine the feedback of SWL in the management of symptomatic renal stones in children with stenting versus non stenting techniques. Patients and Methods: Fifty children with symptomatic renal stones were included in this study, and they were classified into two groups; Group I included 25 patients, 14 males and 11 females, Group II included 8 males and 17 females. Group I were managed with SWL without stent, Group II were managed with stenting prior to SWL. Results: The mean age of group I was 8.44 ± 1.69 years, while the mean age of group II was 8.44 ± 2.42 years. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups as regard to stone size, number of shock waves, power, stone free rate, and residual stones. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups as regard to urinary tract infection which is more in group I. Conclusion: The kidney stones clearance rate in children using SWL with and without stenting was almost equal. SWL without stenting is recommended for management of symptomatic kidney stones in pediatric up to 20 mm.
