THE EFFECT OF BISPHENOL A ON THE ESTROGEN RECEPTORS IN THE RETINA OF FEMALE RATS AND THE AMELIORATIVE EFFECT OF STEM ENHANCER AND ANTI-ESTROGEN DRUG

Back ground: Exposure to the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA) disrupts the hormonal state in many organs. Objective: Histological and immuno-histochemical techniques were used to determine the pathological changes of the retina in response to BPA and the modulating effect of both anti-estrogen drug and stem enhancer. Methods: Female albino rats orally received 20mg BPA /kg body weight/ day for 15 days and then divided to groups and treated with anti-estrogen drug and stem enhancer. Eyes were examined both histologically and immune-histochemically to determine the histo-pathological changes in the retinal layers. Results: A remarkable degenerative histo-pathological changes in the ganglion cell layer and the inner nuclear layer appeared in BPA-treated rats and improvements were seen after treatment with anti-estrogen drug and stem cell enhancer. Conclusions: Both of anti-estrogen drug and stem enhancer had ameliorative effect on the degenerative changes of the retinal layers and the damaged estrogen receptors by the action of BPA but stem enhancer had a more remarkable effect.
