Zearalenone (ZEN) is one of the fungal toxins that affect the genital system causing many hormonal changes in the genital tract in human and animals. The present study aimed to assess the protective effects of grape seed extract (GSE) against the reproductive toxicity induced by Zearalenone in mice. Fifty adult male mice were distributed into five groups, including the control group, the solvent group, ZEN group, treated with ZEN at a dose of 25mg/kg b.w for 7 successive days and the groups treated with GSE at a dose of 150mg/kg b.w/ day for 14 days, with or without ZEN. The results of the current study indicated that management with ZEN resulted in a significant increase in genotoxicity and histopathological changes in the germ cells. In addition, it caused a significant decrease in the count and viability of the sperms as well as the serum level of testosterone hormone. The study showed that treatment with GSE showed successfully improvement in all tested parameters. It could be concluded that pretreatment with GSE ameliorated the reproductive toxicity induced by ZEN and proved the protective role of GSE against ZEN induced toxicity, may be via its antioxidant role, to introduce a tool for enhancement human health and preventing toxicity of mycotoxin contaminant food.
