Department of Zoology, Faculty of science, Al-Azhar University (for girls), Nasr city, Cairo.
This study is conducted to throw some lights on the effect of some food stuffs on the main biological aspects of the two acarid mites Acarus siro L. (flour mite or grain mite), Tyrophagus putrescentiae Sch. (mould mite or stored product mite) and carpoglyphid one the dried fruit mite Carpoglyphus lactis L. (prune mite or dried fruit mite) at 25±1°c and 75% R.H.. Biological studies included the effect of food type on the biological aspects of the mites. In this respect, seven groups of foods (three kinds each) were tested. These groups were (1) carbohydrates, (2) legumes, (3) oil plant seeds, (4) animal proteins, (5) animal fats (6) dried fruits and (7) fermented sugar materials. Obtained results and statistical analysis cleared that females survived slightly longer than males, the developmental stages, fecundity and life table parameters were affected by different types of food. All selected food products were found suitable to some extent for mite survival and development.
