The thyroid gland which synthesizes the thyroid hormones, has a major impact on most body functions such as metabolism, growth, fertility and immunity. The present study aimed to further evaluation of some thyroid gland activity modulators on some physiological and reproductive aspects in adult albino rats. This was achieved by treating the animals with either carbimazole or eltroxin for 40 days and measuring the serum levels T3, T4 and TSH. In addition, blood glucose, lipid profile and testosterone were measured. Results showed that carbimazole significantly increased level of TSH and decreased levels of T3 and T4 hormones, accompanied with increase in total cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose and decreased testosterone. On the other hand, eltroxin significantly decreased level of TSH, increased both T3 and T4 hormones, and accompanied with decrease in blood glucose, total cholesterol and triglycerides, and increased testosterone level. The study showed the essential role of thyroid gland on the metabolic process and reproductive functions. Moreover, pharmacological or pathological modulation of thyroid gland activity might lead to disturbed physiological functions.
