POSSIBLE HEPATOPROTECTIVE EFFECT OF PLATELET RICH PLASMA IN CYCLOPHOSPHAMIDE- INDUCED HEPATOTOXICITY IN ADULT MALE ALBINO RAT

Background: Cyclophosphamide (CPA) is routinely used in the treatment of various autoimmune and certain neoplastic diseases. It is known to cause various side effects. Many in vitro studies demonstrated that platelets contain several growth factors which may theoretically contribute to the process of liver regeneration. Aim of work: Investigate the protective effect of platelet rich plasma (PRP) in CPA-induced hepatotoxicity in adult male albino rat. Materials and Methods: 24 adult male albino rats were used in the present study. The animals were divided into 3 groups: group I (control group), group II (CPA-treated), group III (PRP and CPA-treated). At the end of the experiment, the animals were sacrificed and the liver of each animal was removed and subjected to histological, histochemical (oxidative markers), immune-histochemical (VEGF immunoexpression) and statistical study. Results: CPA caused marked pathological changes in hepatic architecture. There was a decrease in GSH and increase in MDA concentrations in the hepatic tissue with marked increase in VEGF immunoexpression. Treatment with PRP in group III showed restoration of hepatic architecture and improvement in the concentrations of the oxidative markers (MDA and GSH) and VEGF immunoexpression. Conclusion: PRP could protect the liver of adult male albino rat from CPA toxic effect.
