Smoking is a critical health issue due to the numerous health problems associated with this bad practice such as heart disease, liver and kidney disease and many types of cancer especially lung cancer. The majority of the injurious effects associated with tobacco consumption is mediated through nicotine. Our work aimed to assess the reno-protective effect of Propolis extract as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent against nicotine induced renal injury. In Sprague Dawely rats, Propolis was given orally with two different doses (200 or 300mg/kg) along with nicotine (10 mg/kg, I.P.) daily for eight weeks. Nicotine induced renal injury mainly through increase oxidative stress and production of reactive oxygen species. Propolis improved survival and prevented the reduction in body weight associated with nicotine. Propolis attenuated kidney injury induced by nicotine as reflected by decreased levels of serum creatinine and urea. Thus, Propolis extract may be recommended to minimize the injurious effects associated with nicotine via its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
