SELF-EFFICACY AMONG PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC DISEASES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY

Chronic diseases are complex diseases requiring several positive health behaviors for optimal control; self-efficacy forms the theoretical basis for controlling it. Aim: This study aimed to compare between levels of self-efficacy among patients with different chronic diseases. Methods: A comparative exploratory design was utilized to conduct this study at the outpatient clinics of cardiac, chest, diabetes and medicine in Ain shams university hospital. A purposive sample of 250 adult patients with chronic diseases consisted of five homogenous equal groups from the before mentioned settings. Tools: Two tools were used in this study; A structured interview questionnaire sheet to assess patients’ socio-demographic and medical characteristics, and chronic diseases self-efficacy scale to determine level of self efficacy among patients with different chronic diseases. Results: There was statistically significant difference between the selected five groups of chronic diseases in all aspects of self efficacy except for communication with physician. Conclusion: Self efficacy is different between patients with heart diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic renal failure, liver cirrhosis and diabetes mellitus. Recommendations: Conducting future studies to assess level of self efficacy for each group of patients and determine factors affecting it.
