Objectives The aim of this study is to compare the effects of using different techniques on postoperative bleeding, postoperative pain, and incidence of infection in adult tonsillectomy. Patients and methods This study included 30 adult patients assigned to undergo tonsillectomy. Patients were divided randomly into two groups; group A included patients who underwent tonsillectomy with only suture ligation, while group B underwent bipolar tonsillectomy with no ligations. Items of comparison between groups were postoperative bleeding, pain, and tonsillar fossa healing. Patients were examined 1,5,14 days after surgery. Results Regarding post operative bleeding, non recorded in both groups in the early phase while secondary bleeding was a little bit higher in group B. Postoperative pain was comparable between the two groups. Tonsillar fossa healing was significantly better in group A (p<0.05). Conclusion Bipolar tonsillectomy is an effective and safe method to remove tonsils in adults. There were significant decrease in operation time, same post operative pain, and non significant difference between the two groups regarding postoperative bleeding.
