The aim of the present study was to examine the impact of administration of pomegranate and apple juice on serum insulin, glucose, lipid profile and oxidative stress, in normal and diabetic rats. 48 male Sprague dawely rats were divided into 6 groups. Three healthy control groups include normal control, normal Pomegranate and normal apples (4ml/day). While the other 3 groups were induced diabetic by intraperitoneal injection with 105mg/kg B.W. of alloxan. One group served as a positive diabetic control. The other 2 groups were administered by oral gavage 4ml/day of pomegranate and apple juice. The feeding trial continued for four weeks. Results show that consumption of pomegranate and apple juice resulted in a significant decrease (p>0.05) in serum TC; LDL-C; VLDL-C and in TC/HDL ratio, LDL/HDL ratio and MDA, as compared to diabetic control group. Also a significant decrease (p>0.05) in serum creatinine and BUN was observed in diabetic group administered with pomegranate juice. Pomegranate and apple juice resulted in a significant increase (p>0.05) in serum catalase compared to diabetic rats. On the other hand there was no significant change in serum glucose, insulin, TAG, HDL-C, AST and ALT is observed in pomegranate and apples diabetic groups as compared to positive diabetic. It was concluded that the pomegranate and apple juice has considerable hypolipdemic effect, strengthening antioxidant status and delaying the progress of diabetes complications as well, with the best effect obtained with pomegranate juice.
