This study was conducted to test the ability of tomato juice to prevent experimentally induced nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) in vivo. Nonalcoholic fatty liver was achieved in male wistar rats by daily introduce of high fat (HF) + high fructose (HFr) diet. Tomato juice (50%w/w) was added to drinking water and was given to rats from the first day of HF + HFr diet intaking. Liver function biomarkers (ALT, AST and albumin) were measured. Lipid profile including total cholesterol and triglyceride were examined. Results showed that tomato juice succeeded to significantly (P<0.05) decreased liver enzymes compared with HF + HFr diet group. Tomato juice also could significantly (P<0.05) increased serum albumin decreased by HF + HFr diet. It could significantly (P<0.05) normalize lipid profile biomarkers appeared in significant (P<0.05) decrease of total cholesterol and triglycerides. Conclusion: Consumption of tomato juice may have a useful effect as hepatoprotective lipid lowering agent. Consequently, it can be used for the management of NAFLD.
